The Majesty Of South Africa

Unlocking It’s Potential

Mark Voloshin made his first visit to South Africa in 1985. In that time he was quickly able to see through the political unrest and recognise the potential and beauty hidden within the borders of the country.

Dr Voloshin felt close ties to the land, as it was in a similar space to one that Russia had already been in earlier. He thus felt obligated to help South Africa evolve into a prosperous and thriving nation.

Although he fell in love with South Africa, it was Cape Town’s rich beauty and impeccable wines that especially captured Dr Voloshin’s imagination and it lingered in his head long after his return to Russia.

Missing the wines and tastes of the Cape winelands, the business-savvy Mark Voloshin noticed a lucrative gap in the Russian market. Lacking quality wines, he returned to South Africa in 1986 to specifically establish the Marvol brand in the South African wine export market, and thriving business was soon to be born.

Showing true business know-how, Dr Voloshin spent some time searching for the perfect wine farm to purchase. Whilst searching, Dr Voloshin immersed himself in many other South African projects, including building more than 150 houses for mine workers and aiding the RDP in providing solar paneling to enhance the energy efficiency of schools in the Eastern Cape.

It was only much later that the Hazendal Estate in Stellenbosch finally matched all his requirements and Dr Voloshin knew he had found his perfect farm. He then wasted no time and became the first Russian wine estate owner in South Africa on the same day that the country voted in its first democratic leader – the 27th April 1994.

Mark Voloshin – Commitment Beyond Business

The South African Vision

Mark Voloshin and his Marvol Group’s interest in South Africa does not only extend to business ventures. It also includes a visionary plan of helping a country that Voloshin fell in love with so many years ago, helping it meet its full potential. In this regard, Hazendal Estate, one of Stellenbosch’s oldest wine farms has been successfully restored and revitalised through Marvol’s commitment, thus preserving a slice of history for future generations.

Another venture that is close to Dr Voloshin’s heart, is spreading the unique traditions of Russian culture to a new South African audience, prompting him to fully fund the Centre for Russian Studies at the University of Cape Town. With the stated aim of promoting an exchange of ideas and information between the two countries, it serves to bring the two nations together.

A visit to the acclaimed Marvol Museum on the Hazendal Wine Estate is yet another testament to Mark Voloshin’s commitment to both his beloved nations. This unique wine cellar gallery offers an eclectic and culturally rich mix of Russian art and new local pieces. Whilst educating people about Russia’s rich history, the gallery also gives new South African artists a place to exhibit their work, offering them opportunities never before made available to them.

Hazendal Wine Estate

Cape Wine Collection

Since his first taste of the exquisite South African wines, Dr Mark Voloshin knew that the Marvol Group needed to invest in a wine farm. Hazendal was bought on the same day as South Africa’s first ever democratic elections, giving the Marvol Group the historic title of being the first foreign investors in the New South Africa. Hazendal has since been revitalised – the vineyards have been replanted and the wine cellar has been converted to a tasting centre. The establishment of the Marvol Museum uniquely combines a truly South African farm with Russian culture.

The Marvol Group’s work at Hazendal does not only extend to the estate itself, but also takes great effort to improve the living situation of the farm workers. In 1997, a small village was built for the Hazendal workers, consisting of 11 houses equipped with electricity, flowing water as well as bathrooms and toilets. At the moment there are six families living in the ‘Hazendal Village’ and other farmers’ children, who do not live permanently on the farm, are also welcome to use the after-work community facilities, where an educator comes in daily. Since 1998 Hazendal has also had a permanent social worker on staff to look after the well-being of the farm workers and their families.
